The Returned and Services League evolved out of the concerns of Servicemen returning from the battlefields of World War I. In 1916, a conference recommended the formation of the Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA). Their objective was to preserve the spirit of mateship formed amidst the carnage and horror of battle, to honour the memory of the fallen and to provide mutual help to each other whenever required. The RSSILA of 1916 has evolved to the RSL of today. The RSL is an apolitical organisation run by the members for the members and the serving and ex-serving community at large.
