The Returned and Services League evolved out of the concerns of Servicemen returning from the battlefields of World War I. In 1916, a conference recommended the formation of the Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA). Their objective was to preserve the spirit of mateship formed amidst the carnage and horror of battle, to honour the memory of the fallen and to provide mutual help to each other whenever required. The RSSILA of 1916 has evolved to the RSL of today. The RSL is an apolitical organisation run by the members for the members and the serving and ex-serving community at large.

BRIEF HISTORY

  • Joined CMF at 18 years of age in 1966
  • Served approx 9 ½ years in the Army
  • Volunteered for National Service in 1968
  • Served in Vietnam with the 9th Battalion RAR for 12months as a Machine Gunner then as a Tracker and Tracker Team Commander
  • Rejoined the CMF in 1970 and served for 5 ½ years as an Assault Pioneer then as Platoon Sergeant. Post Military – Worked for Avis as a Quality Controller, worked in the Furniture Retail Industry
  • In 1984 commenced work at QRX TPT (now owned by TOLL) until retirement in 2007.

  • Sent to Vietnam with 101 FdBty, 1st Fd Regt RAA from May 1969 to May 1970.
  • In January 1971, posted to a 106 FdBty in Singapore. In January 1972, 108 FdBty replaced l06 FdBty and was posted to 108 FdBty until return to Australia in February 1973.
  • Discharged from the Army in March 1973.
  • Post Service was employed with Commonwealth Dept of Social Security until retirement on medical grounds in 1999.
